Number of International Students Attending American Colleges and Universities Continues Rising
A new report says more and more international students are attending colleges and universities in the United States. It also notes a large in the number of international students from China.
These findings are from the latest edition of the Open Doors Report. The report is a joint project of the State Department and the Institute of International Education, a educational and training organization.
The report documents the record number of international students in the United States during the twenty-eleven, twenty-twelve school year. It says more than seven hundred sixty-four thousand four-hundred such students were attending American colleges and universities during that period. That represents an increase of almost six percent one year earlier.
By comparison, the number of Americans studying overseas increased by one percent.
The report says one hundred ninety-four thousand students at American colleges and universities were from China. That is an increase of more than twenty-three percent over the year before.
Peggy Blumenthal is an to the president of the Institute of International Education. She described the effect of the increase in Chinese students.
“Now they have been coming for some time. But this year was the highest level ever, and it really showed in the figures, driving the whole global, international undergraduate to be higher than the students.”
She says many Chinese families are able to pay for the highest-quality education for their children. The children mainly choose to study in America.
“We know many of them have enough income to be able to afford to send them anywhere in the world that they want to go. And for the most part, looking around the world, Chinese students still come to the United States as their of choice.”
Chinese students are not the only ones who want to attend American colleges and universities. After China, India sends the second largest number of students to the United States for higher education. India has about one hundred thousand students in American schools. South Korea is third with about seventy two thousand students.
Why do so many foreign students study in the United States? Peggy Blumenthal provides one reason.
“The advantage America has is that we have a huge system and a very diverse system. So there are over four thousand universities and colleges in the United States, and what that tells us is there is still a lot of room to international students.”
Foreign students represent less than four percent of the total student population in American higher education. Ms. Blumenthal says this means there is still a lot of for international students.

미국 2년제 대학 및 종합 대학으로 유학하는 국제 학생 수 증가세
새로 발간된 보고서에 따르면 미국의 2년제 대학과 종합대학에 재학하는 국제 학생의 수가 점점 증가하고 있으며, 그 중 중국 학생들의 증가가 크다고 한다.
이 같은 결과는 “오픈 도어스 리포트(Open Doors Report)” 최신호에 실렸다. 이 보고서는 미국 국무부와 비영리 교육 훈련 단체인 “국제 교육 재단(Institute of International Education)”이 공동으로 작성했다.
보고서는 2011년 ~ 2012년 간 미국에 등록한 국제 학생의 숫자를 보여주는데, 이를 보면 해당 기간 동안 764,400명 이상의 국제 학생들이 미국 2년제 대학과 종합 대학에 재학중이었다. 1 년 전과 비교하면 약 6%가량 상승한 수치다.
반면, 해외에서 유학하는 미국 학생 수의 증가는 1%에 그쳤다.
보고서에 따르면 중국에서 미국의 2년제 대학과 종합 대학으로 유학을 온 학생의 수는 194,000명 이었다. 이는 작년에 비해 23% 이상 증가한 수치다.
페기 블루멘탈(Peggy Blumenthal) 씨는 국제 교육 재단(Institute of International Education) 이사장의 보좌관이다. 그녀는 중국 유학생들의 증가가 미치는 영향을 다음과 같이 설명한다.
“그간 중국 학생들은 꾸준히 건너왔습니다만 올해는 역대 최고 수준이고, 이는 수치 상으로 세계 각국으로부터 유학 온 국제 학부생의 입학자 수가 대학원 입학자 수를 추월하는 배경이 되었습니다.”
그녀는 많은 중국 가정들이 자녀를 위한 양질의 교육에 대해 지불할 경제적 능력이 있으며, 이들 자녀들은 주로 미국을 (유학 대상 국가로) 선택한다고 말한다.
“이들 중 많은 사람들은 충분한 수입을 올리고 있어 그들이 원하는 전 세계 어는 곳이라도 유학을 보낼 비용을 감당할 수 있다고 알고 있습니다. 중국 학생들이 전 세계 여러 나라를 고려하기도 하지만 보통 선호하는 목적지로 여전히 미국을 선택하고 있습니다.”
미국의 2년제 대학 및 종합 대학에서 유학하기를 원하는 이들은 중국 학생들 뿐만이 아니다. 중국에 이어 인도가 두 번째로 많은 수의 학생들을 미국의 고등교육 기관에 보내고 있다. 미국 대학에 재학 중인 인도 학생의 숫자는 약 100,000명이며, 한국은 약 72,000명으로 3위를 차지한다.
왜 이렇게 많은 국제 학생들이 미국에서 유학을 할까? 페기 블루멘탈 씨는 다음과 같은 하나의 이유를 꼽는다.
“미국(유학)의 장점은 대규모의 다양한 (교육)시스템이 구비 되어 있다는 점 입니다. 미국에는 4,000개 이상의 종합 대학 및 2년제 대학이 있는데, 이는 국제 학생들을 모집에 있어 여전히 상당한 여지가 남아 있다는 사실을 말해줍니다.”
미국 고등교육에 있어 전체 학생 수 중 국제 학생이 차지하는 비중은 4% 가 채 되지 않는다. 블루멘탈 씨에 따르면 이 수치는 국제 학생들에게 있어 여전히 많은 (유학의) 기회가 있음을 뜻한다고 말한다.
