Humans are not the only ones who like to use tablet computers. The organization Orangutan Outreach has started a program called Apps for Apes using Apple’s iPad. Orangutan Outreach was started by Richard Zimmerman and is based in New York City. He began the organization six years ago with the goal of protecting orangutans in the wild.
The organization started Apps for Apes one year ago. The program introduces the Apple iPad to orangutans in zoos. Apps for Apes has three goals. The first goal is to provide interesting activities for captive orangutans. The second goal is to raise awareness among zoo visitors about how smart these animals are. The third goal is to urge people to visit Orangutan Outreach’s website, redapes.org, to learn how they can help protect orangutans in the wild.
Orangutan Outreach says the iPad is a perfect device for the animal because of the touchscreen technology. With some , the orangutans are able to use different apps to listen to music, play games and do other activities.
Mr. Zimmerman describes what has been reported by zoos on the reaction of the apes to seeing and using the tablets.
“The young orangutans are very , and they go to it immediately. The females seem to be the quickest learners. Some of the big males, they’re not scared, but they’re curious what this strange thing is. And they spend a little time watching it .”
Mr. Zimmerman says the program could affect the behavior of orangutans, but it is too early to know. However, he tells us about one male orangutan at the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, zoo named Tommy.
“First he didn’t want anything to do with it. But he would watch from the back of his as the zoo keepers worked with the other orangutans. He would gradually move closer. In general, Tommy is a very shy orangutan. But since the iPad has been introduced, his behavior has in a way and he has gotten more being near people. And he now actually likes the iPad, and he likes to use it. So there’s been a change in his actual personality, and we think it’s due to the iPad use.”
The program was first launched at the Milwaukee County Zoo. It has to more than 10 other zoos as well as a rescue center for in the United States and Canada, and is growing worldwide.

이제 오랑우탄을 위한 앱도 아이패드에 등장!
태블릿 컴퓨터 사용을 즐기는 것은 인간만이 아니다. “오랑우탄 아웃리치(Orangutan Outreach)”라는 비영리 단체는 “애플의 아이패드를 사용하는 유인원을 위한 앱”이라는 새로운 프로그램을 시작했다. 오랑우탄 아웃리치는 리차드 짐머맨(Richard Zimmerman) 씨에 의해 시작되었으며 뉴욕에 기반을 두고 있다. 그는 6 년 전 야생의 오랑우탄을 보호하고자 이 단체를 조직했다.

오랑우탄 아웃리치에 따르면 아이패드는 터치스크린 기술을 기반으로 작동되기 때문에 오랑우탄들에게 완벽한 기기라고 한다. 약간만 도와주면 오랑우탄들은 다양한 앱을 이용하여 음악을 감상하고, 게임도 하며, 기타 활동도 할 수 있다.
짐머맨 씨는 동물원으로부터 오랑우탄들이 이 태블릿 컴퓨터를 보고 사용하면서 보이는 반응에 대해 보고받았던 것을 언급한다.
“젊은 오랑우탄들은 호기심이 상당히 많아, 아이패드에 즉시 다가갑니다. 암컷들이 더 빨리 배우는 것 같아요. 일부 덩치 큰 수컷들은 겁을 먹지는 않지만, 이 이상한 것이 무언지에 대해서는 궁금해 합니다. 그리고 약간의 거리를 두고 잠시동안 바라보지요.”
짐머맨 씨는 이 프로그램이 오랑우탄의 행동에 영향을 미칠 수 있으나 이를 확인하는 데는 시간이 필요하다고 말한다. 그러면서도 위스콘신 주의 밀워키에 위치한 동물원에 있는 토미(Tommy)라는 이름의 한 수컷 오랑우탄에 대해 이야기를 언급한다.
“무엇보다 그 녀석은 아이패드로 아무것도 하려 하지 않았습니다. 하지만 동물원 관리자가 다른 오랑우탄들과 함께 노는 동안 자신의 영역 뒤쪽에서 바라보았습니다. 그러다가 점차 기기에 가까이 다가갔죠. 원래 토미는 아주 수줍움이 많은 녀석입니다. 하지만 아이패드를 소개 받은 이후, 이 녀석의 행동이 어느 정도 부드러워지고, 사람 곁에 가는 것에 더욱 익숙해졌습니다. 나아가 이제는 아이패드를 좋아하고, 아이패드를 가지고 노는 것을 좋아합니다. 즉 토미의 실제 성격에 변화가 생긴 것인데, 우리는 이 원인이 아이패드 사용 때문이라고 생각하고 있습니다.”
이 프로그램은 밀워키 카운티 동물원(Milwaukee County Zoo)에서 처음 시작되었는데 10개 이상의 다른 동물원은 물론, 미국과 캐나다의 유인원 구조 센터로도 시행이 확장되어 왔으며, 전 세계로 확대되고 있다.
