Every people has its own way of saying things, its own special expressions. Many everyday American expressions are based on colors.
Red is a hot color. Americans often use it to express heat. They may say they are red hot about something . When they are red hot they are very angry about something. The small hot tasting peppers found in many Mexican foods are called red hots for their color and their taste. Fast loud music is popular with many people. They may say the music is red hot, especially the kind called Dixieland jazz.
Pink is a lighter kind of red. People sometimes say they are when they are in good health. The expression was first used in America at the beginning of the twentieth century. It probably comes from the fact that many babies are born with a nice pink color that shows that they are in good health.
Blue is a cool color. The traditional blues music in the United States is the opposite of red hot music. Blues is slow, sad and . Duke Ellington and his orchestra recorded a famous song Mood Indigo about the deep blue color, indigo. In the words of the song: “You ain’t been blue till you’ve had that Mood Indigo.” Someone who is blue is very sad.

사람들은 저마다 무언가를 말하는 특별한 방식이 있다. 저마다의 특별한 표현말이다. 미국인들이 날마다 사용하는 표현들 중에는 색깔에 기반을 둔 표현들이 많다.
빨간색은 정열적인 색이다. 미국인들은 열기를 표현하고자 빨간색을 이용하기도 한다. 무언가 불공평한 것에 대해 ‘레드핫’이라고 말할 수도 있다. 그들이 ‘레드핫’ 상태라는 것은 그들이 무언가에 엄청나게 화가 났다는 것을 의미한다. 여러 가지 멕시칸 음식에 사용되는 매운맛을 내는 작은 피망은 그 색깔과 입안이 얼얼할 정도로 매운 맛으로 인해 ‘레드핫’이라고 불리운다. 빠르고 시끄러운 음악은 많은 사람들에게 인기있다. 그들은 그러한 음악, 특히 딕실랜드 재즈 장르의 음악을 ‘레드핫’이라고 부른다.

초록색은 나무와 잔디를 표현할 때에는 자연스럽지만 사람을 표현할 때에는 자연스러운 표현이 아니다. 배 아파하는 사람은 그녀가 ‘약간의 초록색을 느낀다(배가 아프다)’라고 말할 수 있다. 높은 파도로 인해 배 멀미를 하는 사람에겐 ‘푸르게 보인다(안색이 안 좋아 보인다)’라고 표현할 수 있다.
가령 친구의 것만큼 좋은 것, 예를 들어 스피드를 낼 수 있는 새 차와 같은 것을 가지지 못해서 속상할 때가 있다. 그런 사람은 ‘질투로 푸르다(몹시 샘을 내다)’라고 표현할 수 있다. 어떤 사람들은 친구가 자신보다 더 많은 그린백(달러)을 가져서 시기한다. 지폐 뒷면의 색이 푸르기 때문에 달러를 ‘그린백(지폐)’이라고 불린다.
검은색은 표현에서 자주 쓰인다. 사람들은 모든 게 잘 안되는 날을 ‘블랙 데이’라고 표현한다. 가장 비극적인 날은 블랙 데이로 기억된다. 현재 블랙리스트는 불법이지만, 한때 몇몇 회사들은 비인기 단체에 속했다는 이유로 블랙리스트에 올랐던 사람들을 고용하기를 거부했다.
경우에 따라 색깔은 상황을 설명한다. ‘브라운 아웃(어둡게 하다)’은 절전을 위한 표현이다. 브라운 아웃은 전력 수요가 너무 많을 경우 일어난다. 전력망은 한 지역 내에서 필요로 하는 모든 전력을 다 제공할 수 없다. ‘블랙 아웃’은 세계 2차 대전에서는 아주 흔한 일이었다. 정부에서는 적들의 비행기가 어두운 밤에 목표물을 찾기 어렵게 하기 위해 도시의 모든 전등을 끄도록 지시하곤 했다.
